my next thought... sorry g

http://www.backyardchickens.com/raising-chickens-basics.php

goodness maybe i do want to live on a farm. i say 'sorry g' because we've already got our work cut out for us this spring. this includes a vegetable and flower garden.

i called cheboygan co-op out of curiosity. you can order baby chicks (insert awwwww) by 4/15 and get them by 5/6, but you have to decide whether you want 'layers' (they'll lay eggs) or 'meat' (meaning you'll eat them at the end of the season).
there's also 'free chick day' which means if you buy a bag of feed you'll get either 3 layers or 5 meat chicks for FREE.

people say they make great pets. think about it... they're outside...and they "imprint" meaning they know you and follow you around. (insert 'mamamamama')
the only warning is to keep them free from predators. sigh... i guess that would include elijahsaurus rex.

i went so far as to look up the ordinances in cheboygan that might prohibit you from raising poultry on your property. i didn't see any explicitly banning it, so you'd be good to have the chicken coop next to the shed! you'd just need a guard dog to keep passerby's and wolves from stealing them away...
